Workplace health programs for healthy aging: Comparing email and in-person coaching to increase daily steps

Updated

Abstract

An average increase of 1,624 steps per day was observed in participants receiving physical activity interventions compared to controls.

  • Both face-to-face motivational interviewing and email-based motivation programs increased daily step counts compared to a control group.
  • Initial improvements in step counts were similar in both intervention groups during the eight-week period.
  • The decline in step counts after the intervention was slower in the face-to-face group than in the email-only group.
  • At one month post-intervention, the face-to-face group reported significantly higher total physical activity measured in MET-minutes per week compared to controls.
  • The findings indicate that workplace health promotion programs can effectively boost physical activity levels in employees.
