Using Wrist Wearables to Track Heart Rate and Energy Use During Rest and Different Exercise Levels

Updated

Abstract

The Apple Watch Series 4 has the highest validity for monitoring heart rate during various physical activities.

  • Standardized typical errors for heart rate monitoring ranged from 0.09-0.62 for the Apple Watch Series 4 to 0.47-1.94 for the Fitbit Versa.
  • Coefficients of variation for heart rate measurements varied between 0.9%-4.3% for the Apple Watch Series 4 and 4.1%-19.1% for the Fitbit Versa.
  • For energy expenditure monitoring, standardized typical errors were 0.34-1.84 for the Apple Watch Series 4 and 0.41-1.65 for the Fitbit Versa.
  • Coefficients of variation for energy expenditure ranged from 13.5%-27.1% for the Apple Watch Series 4 to 8.0%-32.3% for the Fitbit Versa.
  • The Apple Watch Series 4 and Polar Vantage V are considered suitable for valid heart rate measurements at the tested intensities.
