Changes in Young People’s Mental Health Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Updated

Abstract

A total of 1229 participants showed varied mental health changes from prepandemic to midpandemic periods.

  • Minor decreases were observed in externalizing problems, anxiety, and ADHD scores.
  • A slight increase in depression scores was noted during the midpandemic period.
  • Youth with borderline or clinically meaningful prepandemic scores experienced notable decreases in all outcomes, especially externalizing problems.
  • Low-income and Black youth showed small decreases in ADHD compared to their higher-income and White counterparts.
  • Differential susceptibility and resilience for mental health issues during the pandemic may be linked to prepandemic mental health and sociodemographic factors.
