Daily patterns of arm versus central aortic blood pressure and how treatment may change them in a clinical trial

Updated

Abstract

Brachial and central blood pressure measurements in 171 participants with hypertension show significant differences in their diurnal patterns.

  • Brachial and central blood pressure demonstrate typical lower values at night.
  • Night-time is linked to smaller reductions in central blood pressure compared to brachial blood pressure.
  • Decreased pulse pressure amplification is observed during the night (P<0.0001).
  • These patterns remain unchanged after BP-lowering therapy and are consistent after adjusting for day and night-time blood pressure and heart rate (P=0.02).
  • The findings suggest that night-time central blood pressure may have prognostic importance and requires further investigation.
