Semaglutide reduces fentanyl seeking triggered by cues, drug, or stress in male rats

Abstract

Semaglutide fully prevented drug- and stress-induced reinstatement of fentanyl seeking in rats at all tested doses.

  • Semaglutide was administered subcutaneously at doses of 0.026, 0.056, and 0.078 mg/kg.
  • All doses successfully blocked drug- and stress-induced fentanyl seeking triggered by fentanyl infusion or yohimbine administration.
  • The mid (0.056 mg/kg) and higher doses (0.078 mg/kg) were particularly effective in reducing cue-induced fentanyl seeking.
  • These outcomes indicate that semaglutide could be a potential nonopioid treatment for opioid use disorder.
