Abstract

Knockout of REV-ERBα in mice is associated with changes in sleep/wake distribution and homeostatic sleep regulation.

  • Loss of REV-ERBα leads to an advance in sleep/wake distribution relative to the light-dark cycle.
  • KO mice exhibit reduced EEG delta power and sleep consolidation after both baseline and sleep deprivation.
  • The KO mice show a slower increase in homeostatic sleep need during wakefulness.
  • Increased theta activity during wakefulness is linked to subsequent delta power in non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.
  • REV-ERBα deficiency results in increased expression of several clock genes in the brain.
