Banana peel fibers may help lower blood sugar in mice with type 2 diabetes caused by a high-sugar, high-fat diet and toxin

Updated

Abstract

After 5 weeks, banana peel dietary fibers (BP-DFs) reduced blood lipids and glucose levels in type 2 diabetic mice.

  • Food intake was reduced and body weight was increased in mice receiving BP-DFs.
  • Fasting insulin and GLP-1 levels were elevated after dietary intervention with BP-DFs.
  • Liver and pancreatic tissue damage was lessened in the mice treated with BP-DFs.
  • Banana peel soluble dietary fiber (BP-SDF) had the most significant effects among the dietary fibers tested.
  • Fecal analysis indicated that BP-DFs improved gut microbiome balance and increased short-chain fatty acids.
