Blood Sugar Benefits of Modified Wheat Bran Fiber in Diabetic Mice and How It Works Through the Gut

Updated

Abstract

Carboxymethylated wheat bran dietary fibers significantly improved insulin levels and gut microbiota diversity in type 2 diabetic mice after four weeks.

  • The dietary fibers lowered lipid levels and reduced blood sugar in diabetic mice.
  • Increased insulin, GLP-1, PYY, and short-chain fatty acids were observed in the treated mice.
  • Histopathological improvements were noted in the liver and pancreas of the diabetic mice.
  • Gene expression changes indicated that dietary fibers may enhance insulin receptor activity and insulin signaling.
  • The fibers altered gut microbiota composition by increasing Akkermansia muciniphila and decreasing the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio.
