Ascorbic acid enhances the effects of a subeffective dose of esketamine in mice with depression.

  • The combination of ascorbic acid and esketamine may reverse depression-like behaviors in mice.
  • This effect brings the mice's behavior back to levels similar to healthy controls.
  • The enhancement relies on the action of specific AMPA receptors in the hippocampus.
  • Blocking these receptors completely negates the benefits of the ascorbic acid-esketamine combination.
  • Ascorbic acid alone does not show antidepressant effects without esketamine.
