Shared changes in brain support cells across different neurodegenerative diseases

Updated

Abstract

Common alterations in astrocyte state are observed across multiple neurodegenerative disorders.

  • Neuroinflammation is a shared alteration in astrocytes across Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and frontotemporal lobe degeneration.
  • Immune pathways are upregulated in astrocytes, which may exacerbate neurodegeneration.
  • Dysregulated expression of factors that promote synapse formation could lead to synaptic loss.
  • Compromised metabolic support from astrocytes may affect the stability of neurons.
  • Increased responses to cellular stress in astrocytes may act as a protective mechanism against pathology.
