Additional treatments and procedures within 5 years after weight-loss surgery in US patients

Updated

Abstract

Among 33,560 adults, operation or intervention rates at 5 years were 12.27% for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and 8.94% for sleeve gastrectomy (SG).

  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) was associated with a higher likelihood of requiring additional operations or interventions compared to sleeve gastrectomy (SG).
  • Hospitalization rates were lower for SG, with 5-year cumulative incidence rates of 32.79% for SG and 38.33% for RYGB.
  • Endoscopy procedures were less common in SG, with a 5-year incidence of 7.80% compared to 15.83% for RYGB.
  • No significant differences in all-cause mortality were observed between patients undergoing SG and those undergoing RYGB.
  • The median follow-up times for operation or intervention were 3.4 years for RYGB and 2.2 years for SG.
