Five-Year Diabetes Results After Sleeve Gastrectomy Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery

Updated

Abstract

A total of 9,710 patients were included in the evaluation of bariatric surgery outcomes for type 2 diabetes.

  • Weight loss at 1 year was significantly greater with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) compared to sleeve gastrectomy (SG) by a mean difference of 6.3 percentage points.
  • At 5 years, the mean difference in weight loss between RYGB and SG increased to 8.1 percentage points.
  • The T2DM remission rate was approximately 10% higher for RYGB (59.2% at 1 year and 86.1% at 5 years) compared to SG (55.9% at 1 year and 83.5% at 5 years).
  • Patients with RYGB experienced a lower relapse rate of T2DM compared to those with SG, with a hazard ratio of 0.75.
  • At 5 years, hemoglobin A1c levels were reduced by an additional 0.45 percentage points for patients who had RYGB compared to those who had SG.
