How Existing Health Conditions Relate to First-Year Use of GLP-1 Medicines in People with Diabetes or Obesity

Updated

Abstract

Among 69,049 adults initiating GLP-1 receptor agonists, 59.3% had diabetes and 74.4% had obesity.

  • Hypertensive disorder, hyperlipidemia, and chronic kidney disease were associated with increased adherence to GLP-1 receptor agonists in patients with diabetes.
  • In patients with obesity, hyperlipidemia and chronic kidney disease were linked to higher adherence rates.
  • Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and digestive system adverse events were associated with reduced adherence in diabetes patients.
  • Similar patterns of adherence were observed in patients with obesity.
  • Variability in adherence was noted based on drug subtype and patient indication.
