Bifidobacterium breve BBr60 boosts gut short-chain fatty acids and balances immune signals to improve movement problems in Parkinson’s mice

Updated

Abstract

Treatment with BBr60 improved locomotor activity and alleviated microbiota dysbiosis in Parkinson's disease mice.

  • Parkinson's disease is linked to microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal inflammation in a mouse model.
  • BBr60 treatment restored the balance of NLRP3/NLRP6 inflammasomes in the intestines of PD mice.
  • Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were increased in the intestines following BBr60 treatment.
  • BBr60 inhibited the polarization of macrophages towards a pro-inflammatory M1-type in the intestinal environment.
  • The effects of SCFAs on macrophage polarization were reduced in the presence of an NLRP3 activator.
