Peptides PIISVYWK and FSVVPSPK help control blood sugar by affecting key enzymes and glucose transport in type 2 diabetic mice

Abstract

P1 and P2 peptides from blue mussel improved glycemic control in diabetic mice with doses of 1 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg.

  • P1 and P2 inhibited α-glucosidase and DPP-IV activity in human intestinal cells, contributing to better glucose regulation.
  • Treatment with P1 and P2 increased levels of GLP-1 and reduced intestinal glucose uptake.
  • The peptides showed strong anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing NF-κB activation and lowering levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β.
  • P1 and P2 enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity, which may help alleviate oxidative stress and protect pancreatic cells.
  • The peptides preserved β-cell function by promoting insulin secretion and regulating glucagon levels.
