Faster biological aging, changes over time, and risk of death in the Dutch Lifelines study

Updated

Abstract

Among 90,632 participants, higher baseline biological age acceleration was associated with increased mortality risk.

  • A 1-year increase in baseline biological age acceleration correlated with a 7% rise in mortality risk.
  • Acceleration greater than 1 year predicted a 31% higher mortality risk compared to average acceleration.
  • In a subgroup of 25,752 participants with repeated assessments, a greater annual increase in acceleration was linked to a 21% higher mortality risk.
  • Persistent accelerated aging was associated with a 39% increase in mortality risk compared to stable non-accelerated aging.
  • The findings suggest that monitoring biological aging could be important for assessing long-term health risks.
