Increasing BMAL1 in the brain's daily rhythm center may protect mice from anxiety caused by long-term sleep loss

Updated

Abstract

Chronic sleep restriction in young mice significantly reduces their anxiety-like behaviors, particularly through the overexpression of BMAL1 in the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

  • Sleep restriction for 4 weeks led to fewer entries and less time spent in open areas, indicating increased anxiety-like behaviors in the affected mice.
  • Overexpression of BMAL1 in the suprachiasmatic nucleus was associated with a further reduction in anxiety-like behaviors during sleep restriction.
  • BMAL1 expression appeared to counteract damage to synaptic plasticity in the medial prefrontal cortex by modulating inflammatory responses.
  • The study found that sleep restriction may impair signaling pathways related to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) due to inflammation.
