Changes in Body Fat and Metabolic Risk in Obese Teens Taking GLP-1 Medication

Abstract

Of 67 eligible adolescents, 41 (61.2%) received GLP-1 RA therapy, resulting in significant improvements in body composition.

  • GLP-1 RA-treated adolescents displayed a greater reduction in BMI z-scores compared to those not receiving the therapy (-0.34 vs. -0.07).
  • Improvements in muscle-to-fat ratio (MFR) z-scores were also greater in the GLP-1 RA group (0.41 vs. 0.13).
  • Longer duration of GLP-1 RA treatment was linked to better outcomes in both BMI and MFR z-scores.
  • A decrease of 0.25 units in BMI z-score was associated with a 2.8-fold increase in the odds of improving metabolic syndrome components.
  • Similarly, a 0.25-unit increase in MFR z-score correlated with a 1.8-fold higher odds of MetS component improvement.
