How body image appears in psychedelic and meditation experiences and its links to body attitudes

Updated

Abstract

Psychedelic experiences were reported by 90 participants, while 48 shared their meditation experiences.

  • Body image narratives often involved a reduced sense of bodily self and increased sensory sensitivity.
  • Psychedelic experiences more frequently included descriptions of disembodiment, while meditation experiences highlighted boundary dissolution with maintained presence.
  • Reports from individuals using MDMA showed heightened embodiment more often than those using classical psychedelics.
  • Both narratives of heightened embodiment and disembodiment were linked to perceived improvements in body dissatisfaction and body connection.
  • Positive body image themes were associated with perceived enhancements in body connection, particularly among participants with eating disorder traits.
