How Body Weight Affects Semaglutide's Effectiveness During Knee Replacement Surgery

Abstract

Semaglutide users had significantly lower odds of complications following total knee arthroplasty across different BMI classes.

  • In nonobese patients, semaglutide use is associated with lower odds of deep vein thrombosis (OR 0.68), pulmonary embolism (OR 0.49), and pneumonia (OR 0.69).
  • Obese patients using semaglutide showed significantly reduced odds of 90-day periprosthetic joint infection (OR 0.53) and 2-year periprosthetic joint infection (OR 0.65).
  • Semaglutide users in the obese group also had lower odds of 90-day revisions (OR 0.54), deep vein thrombosis (OR 0.67), pulmonary embolism (OR 0.39), and pneumonia (OR 0.69).
  • In morbidly obese patients, semaglutide use is associated with significantly lower rates of 90-day aseptic loosening and myocardial infarction.
  • Findings suggest a BMI-based approach to perioperative semaglutide use, particularly for patients with a BMI greater than 30.
