Body Weight Changes Linked to Kidney Health in New Users of Sodium-Glucose Transporter Drugs

Updated

Abstract

Among 11,569 individuals with diabetes, greater body weight loss is associated with more favorable kidney outcomes after starting SGLT2 inhibitors.

  • Participants were divided into three groups based on body mass index change rates over one year.
  • The annual decline in estimated kidney function (eGFR) was least in the group with the greatest weight loss (tertile 3: -1.65 mL/min/1.73 m) and highest in the group with the least weight loss (tertile 1: -0.78 mL/min/1.73 m).
  • Statistically significant differences in eGFR decline were observed between the tertile groups (p < 0.001).
  • Sensitivity analyses supported the association between body weight loss and improved kidney outcomes following SGLT2 inhibitor treatment.
