Abstract

Calcium supplementation before pregnancy may result in little to no difference in pre-eclampsia or pregnancy loss, based on evidence from one randomized trial involving 1355 women.

  • Calcium supplementation may lead to a risk ratio of 0.85 for pre-eclampsia or pregnancy loss at any gestational age compared to placebo.
  • There may be little to no difference in pre-eclampsia rates, with a risk ratio of 0.84 observed in the same trial.
  • Calcium supplementation might not significantly impact pregnancy loss at any gestational age, indicated by a risk ratio of 0.92.
  • The evidence regarding maternal death and severe morbidity associated with calcium supplementation is very uncertain, with risk ratios of 1.00 and 0.97, respectively.
  • There is very low-certainty evidence regarding the effects of calcium on stillbirth and preterm delivery.
