Abstract

This review includes 10 studies on vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.

  • Evidence regarding the effect of vitamin D supplementation on pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth is very uncertain.
  • Supplementation with vitamin D may reduce the risk of severe postpartum bleeding, but this finding is based on only one study.
  • The potential impact of vitamin D on low birthweight is uncertain, as the evidence suggests both a possible reduction and an increased risk.
  • Supplementation with vitamin D and calcium shows very uncertain effects on preterm birth and low birthweight, with no reports on pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes.
  • The combination of vitamin D, calcium, and other vitamins and minerals provides very uncertain evidence regarding gestational diabetes and maternal adverse events.
