Calcium supplements in pregnancy to help prevent high blood pressure and related problems

Abstract

High-dose calcium supplementation (≥ 1 g/day) is associated with a 45% reduction in the risk of pre-eclampsia compared to placebo.

  • High blood pressure risk decreased by 35% with calcium supplementation in comparison to placebo.
  • A modest reduction in maternal death or serious morbidity by 20% was observed with calcium supplementation.
  • The risk of preterm birth was reduced by 24% among women receiving high-dose calcium.
  • Increased risk of HELLP syndrome was noted in the calcium group, though the absolute number of events was low.
  • Low-dose calcium supplementation (< 1 g/day) also suggested a reduction in pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure.
