Calcium supplements for people who are overweight or obese

Updated

Abstract

Calcium supplementation may result in a small reduction in body mass index (BMI) of -0.18 kg/m.

  • Low-certainty evidence suggests little to no difference in body weight with calcium supplementation compared to placebo.
  • Calcium supplementation may lead to a modest reduction in waist circumference by -0.51 cm.
  • There is low-certainty evidence for a small reduction in body fat mass of -0.34 kg with calcium supplementation.
  • Most studies included in the analysis were short-term, lasting less than six months, and primarily involved women.
  • Concerns regarding risk of bias and statistical variability downgraded the certainty of the evidence.
