Semaglutide’s protective effects on heart, kidney, and metabolism in different stages of chronic kidney disease

Abstract

Semaglutide significantly reduces the risk of major kidney outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Evidence suggests semaglutide may prevent and treat chronic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes.
  • The Evaluate Renal Function with Semaglutide Once Weekly trial indicated a reduction in kidney failure and cardiovascular-related deaths.
  • Semaglutide is associated with decreased albuminuria and lower rates of major cardiovascular events.
  • Guidelines now endorse GLP-1 receptor agonists, especially semaglutide, as a key component in managing diabetic kidney disease.
  • In addition to its kidney-protective effects, semaglutide may improve metabolic parameters in individuals with CKD.
