Heart health outcomes of semaglutide and tirzepatide in type 2 diabetes and obesity

Updated

Abstract

Semaglutide was associated with a 71% reduced risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Semaglutide showed a significant reduction in cardiovascular death (81% reduced risk) and myocardial infarction (30% reduced risk).
  • Heart failure risk was reduced by 40% with semaglutide, although stroke risk did not show significant reduction.
  • Tirzepatide was associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction, but its overall effect on MACE was not statistically significant.
  • No significant associations were found for tirzepatide regarding cardiovascular death, heart failure, or stroke.
  • Exploratory subgroup analyses indicated potential variations in outcomes based on treatment duration.
