Tirzepatide's link to heart and kidney side effects: a meta-analysis of clinical trials

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Tirzepatide was not significantly linked to higher adverse cardiovascular or renal event risk in randomized trials of people with type 2 diabetes or obesity.

Evidence

A meta-analysis of 20 randomized controlled trials with 15,905 participants found no significant difference versus placebo or active controls for adverse cardiovascular events (RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.63-1.08) or renal events (RR 1.22, 95% CI 0.78-1.89).

Caveat

Longer-term safety, especially in high-risk groups, could not be determined because outcome definitions varied and follow-up durations were short.
