A case management approach to help NHS staff with common mental health problems return to work sooner: a feasibility study

Updated

Abstract

Approximately 1938 NHS staff were on sick leave with a common mental health disorder during the study period.

  • The intervention included early referral to occupational health and standardized work-focused case management.
  • Out of 42 screened, 24 participants consented, with 11 receiving the case management intervention and 13 receiving care as usual.
  • Follow-up data were collected from 46% of participants at 3 months and 42% at 6 months.
  • The case management intervention and training were found to be acceptable and inexpensive to deliver.
  • Challenges in identifying and recruiting eligible participants were noted, with low uptake of occupational health referrals.
