Guided self-help for depression in autistic adults: a feasibility trial

Updated

Abstract

Seventy participants were randomly assigned to either guided self-help or treatment as usual for depression in autism.

  • The guided self-help intervention was reported to be feasible and well received by both participants and therapists.
  • At 24 weeks, 86% of the guided self-help group remained in the study, compared to 54% in the treatment as usual group.
  • The most practical outcome point for measuring effectiveness was identified as 16 weeks post-randomisation.
  • Qualitative feedback indicated that guided self-help had enhanced credibility among participants at randomisation.
  • Inter-rater reliability for the interview measure of depression was less than adequate, affecting the sensitivity to change analyses.
