Comparison of guided self-help and individual trauma-focused therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder

Updated

Abstract

Non-inferiority was demonstrated at 16 weeks on the PTSD scale with a mean difference of 1.01.

  • Guided self-help for mild to moderate PTSD is associated with similar improvements in PTSD symptoms compared to face-to-face cognitive-behavioral therapy at 16 weeks.
  • Both treatment groups maintained improvements of over 60% in PTSD symptoms at 52 weeks, though non-inferiority results favored cognitive-behavioral therapy at this time point.
  • Guided self-help was found to be significantly cheaper to deliver (£277) than cognitive-behavioral therapy (£729).
  • Quality-adjusted life years showed no significant difference between the two treatments, with an incremental difference of -0.04.
  • Guided self-help appeared acceptable and well tolerated by participants, with no important adverse events reported.
