Chlorhexidine mouthwash effects on dental plaque and gum health

Updated

Abstract

A total of 5,345 patients were included in the analysis of chlorhexidine mouthrinse's effects on gingivitis.

  • Four to six weeks of chlorhexidine mouthrinse use reduced mild gingivitis by 0.21 on a 0 to 3 scale.
  • A significant reduction in dental plaque was observed, with a standardised mean difference of -1.45 after four to six weeks.
  • Chlorhexidine use was associated with a large increase in extrinsic tooth staining, with a standardised mean difference of 1.07.
  • Various adverse effects were reported, including taste disturbances and oral mucosa symptoms like soreness and irritation.
  • There is insufficient evidence to evaluate the impact of chlorhexidine on moderate or severe gingival inflammation.
