Toothpastes with Triclosan and Copolymers for Improving Oral Health

Updated

Abstract

Analysis of 30 studies involving 14,835 participants indicated that triclosan/copolymer toothpastes reduced plaque and gingival inflammation compared to fluoride-only toothpastes.

  • Triclosan/copolymer toothpaste reduced plaque by 0.47 on a 0 to 5 scale after six to seven months, representing a 22% reduction in the control group.
  • Inflammation from gingivitis was reduced by 0.27 on a 0 to 3 scale after six to nine months, equating to a 22% reduction in the control group.
  • The proportion of bleeding sites decreased by 0.13 after six to seven months, showing a 48% reduction in bleeding in the control group.
  • Triclosan/copolymer toothpaste slightly reduced coronal caries by 0.16 after 24 to 36 months, with a 5% reduction in the control group.
  • Evidence regarding the prevention of periodontitis was insufficient, with no difference noted between the toothpaste types after 36 months.
