Circulation. Heart failure

Choline-rich diet and its gut bacteria product, trimethylamine N-oxide, may worsen heart failure caused by high blood pressure

Updated

Abstract

Pulmonary edema, cardiac enlargement, and left ventricular ejection fraction were significantly worse in mice fed diets supplemented with either choline or TMAO compared to controls.

  • Heart failure severity is significantly enhanced in mice receiving diets supplemented with choline or TMAO.
  • Myocardial fibrosis was significantly greater in the TMAO and choline groups relative to controls.
  • Dietary choline and TMAO levels may contribute to worse cardiac function following heart failure.
