Link between shared placenta type and early birth in twin pregnancies: a review of 29,864 cases

Updated

Abstract

Monochorionicity is significantly associated with an increased risk of preterm birth at all gestations.

  • In a review of 39 studies covering 29,864 pregnancies, monochorionic twins had higher odds of preterm birth compared to dichorionic twins.
  • The odds of preterm birth at ≤28 weeks were 2.14 times higher for monochorionic pregnancies.
  • For pregnancies reaching ≤32 and ≤34 weeks, the odds ratios were 1.55 and 1.47, respectively.
  • Among asymptomatic women, the odds of preterm birth at ≤34 weeks increased to 1.85 for monochorionic twins.
  • Sensitivity analysis revealed a significant increase in spontaneous preterm birth odds for monochorionicity at both ≤34 and <37 weeks.
