How the timing of external stress affects oxidative stress and damage in people working night shifts

Updated

Abstract

A total of 53 studies were reviewed to understand the relationship between night shift work and oxidative stress.

  • The majority of studies (n = 41) were conducted in occupational settings.
  • Night shift work was linked to specific biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, though results were inconsistent.
  • Most studies focused on oxidative stress/damage (n = 19), followed by inflammatory responses (n = 10) and metabolic outcomes (n = 12).
  • Only a small number of studies measured biomarkers related to circadian rhythms, such as melatonin or cortisol.
  • Further investigation is needed into the temporal dynamics of oxidative stress processes triggered by environmental and occupational stressors.
