Chronotype linked to metabolic syndrome risk over time in middle-aged Japanese workers

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Among middle-aged Japanese civil servants, an evening chronotype was linked to a higher 4-year risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

Evidence

This longitudinal cohort analysis followed 2,231 non-rotating, non-night shift workers free of metabolic syndrome at baseline and found that evening chronotype was independently associated with higher incident metabolic syndrome over 4 years versus intermediate chronotype (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.48-3.57).

Caveat

Because the cohort was limited to middle-aged Japanese civil servants and excluded night-shift workers, the findings may not generalize to other populations or work schedules.
