Daily Melatonin Patterns and Daytime Sleepiness in Parkinson’s Disease

Updated

Abstract

Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) exhibited a significantly lower amplitude of the melatonin rhythm and 24-hour melatonin area under the curve (AUC) compared to controls (P < .001).

  • Blunted circadian rhythms of melatonin secretion were observed in PD patients.
  • No significant differences in circadian phase markers were found between PD patients and controls.
  • PD patients with excessive daytime sleepiness had a lower melatonin rhythm amplitude and AUC compared to those without excessive sleepiness (P = .001).
  • Disease duration and severity metrics were not significantly related to melatonin circadian rhythm measures in the PD group.
