Disrupted Body Clock Linked to Delirium in First Week After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

Abstract

In a study of 100 patients with mild traumatic brain injury, 12 developed delirium during the first week following their injury.

  • Circadian rhythm disruptions are linked to an increased risk of delirium after mild traumatic brain injury.
  • Interdaily stability, a measure of circadian rhythm consistency, was significantly lower in patients who developed delirium compared to those who did not (0.27 vs. 0.48).
  • Each one-unit increase in interdaily stability was associated with an 84% reduction in the risk of developing delirium.
  • Delirium onset occurred immediately before the first nighttime sleep in three patients, indicating a potential timing relationship.
