How a person's daily activity pattern affects performance in China's medical residency training, with loneliness playing a role

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Among Chinese residency trainees, an evening was associated with higher final training grades, with mediating much of that relationship.

Evidence

Retrospective analysis of 198 residents using chronotype and loneliness questionnaires with generalized linear modeling and mediation analysis found associations between MEQ-SA score, UCLA Loneliness score, and training grades, with loneliness mediating 55.66% of the chronotype-performance link.

Caveat

Because this was a single-center retrospective observational study based on questionnaire measures, the findings are vulnerable to confounding and cannot show that chronotype or loneliness causes better performance.

What this is

  • This study investigates how circadian rhythm preferences affect academic performance in residency training in China.
  • It explores the relationship between , levels, and training grades among residents.
  • The findings reveal that evening are associated with better performance, mediated by .

Essence

  • Evening among residents correlate with higher academic performance, with acting as a significant mediator in this relationship.

Key takeaways

  • Evening are linked to better academic performance in residency training. Specifically, residents with evening preferences achieved higher final grades compared to their morning counterparts.
  • levels significantly mediate the relationship between and academic performance. Higher is associated with better grades, suggesting complex interactions between social factors and learning.

Caveats

  • The study's findings may not be generalizable beyond the single hospital where the research was conducted. Further research is needed to explore different populations.
  • The study did not measure actual study time or sleep duration, which could influence the observed relationships.
  • The design does not allow for causal inferences between and , indicating a need for further investigation.

Definitions

  • Chronotype: An individual's preference for morning or evening activities, influencing their daily rhythms.
  • Loneliness: A complex emotional state characterized by feelings of isolation and lack of social connections.
