Daily Activity Patterns in Restless Legs Syndrome and Their Link to Symptom Severity

Updated

Abstract

Patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) demonstrated a non-significant trend toward delayed estimated dim light melatonin onset (eDLMO) at 10:01 PM compared to insomnia controls at 9:33 PM.

  • The mean age of RLS patients was 61.2 years, with 90% being female.
  • Higher symptom severity scores on the International RLS Study Group rating scale were modestly associated with later eDLMO in RLS patients.
  • The association between eDLMO and symptom severity remained significant after adjusting for age and depressive symptoms.
  • In contrast, there was no significant relationship between eDLMO and sleep quality measures in the insomnia control group.
  • These findings suggest a possible link between circadian phase delay and symptom severity in RLS, though further research is needed.
