Symptom scores and risk factors linked to long-term effects after COVID-19 in hospitalized children in Taiwan

Abstract

35.7% of children hospitalized for acute COVID-19 developed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC).

  • Children with PASC experienced a longer average fever duration of 3.2 days compared to 2.6 days in those without PASC.
  • Lower viral loads were observed in children with PASC, indicated by higher RT-PCR Ct values of 17.1 versus 14.2.
  • Higher rates of antiviral therapy were noted in the PASC group (19.6%) compared to the non-PASC group (6.5%).
  • Total clinical scores were significantly higher in children with PASC, averaging 37.9 compared to 31.5 in those without.
  • The multivariable prediction model achieved an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84, indicating good predictive utility for identifying PASC risk.
