Coffee improves attention problems during long-term sleep loss in people with the ADORA2A C/C gene variant

Abstract

Regular coffee consumption can counteract sleep deprivation effects on attention in genetically caffeine sensitive individuals.

  • Subjective sleepiness increased for both coffee and decaffeinated coffee groups during five nights of sleep restriction.
  • Regular coffee was associated with better sustained and selective attention compared to decaffeinated coffee during sleep deprivation.
  • Initial benefits of coffee were observed on various performance tasks during periods of insufficient sleep.
  • All performance differences between the groups disappeared following a recovery night without coffee.
