How mental health symptoms and sex relate to sleep in children with ADHD

Updated

Abstract

Sixty percent of children with ADHD experience sleep problems, with 75% of girls affected compared to 53% of boys.

  • Girls with ADHD show poorer sleep functioning than boys across most sleep domains.
  • Anxiety symptoms are linked to increased bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety.
  • Hyperactive-impulsive symptoms are associated with more night wakings and parasomnia behaviors.
  • Oppositional-defiant disorder and depressive symptoms correlate with shorter sleep duration.
  • Depression is also connected to increased daytime sleepiness and overall sleep problems.
  • No differences in sleep problem rates were found between ADHD subtypes or age groups.
