Comparing psychological treatments for mental health problems after sexual abuse in children and teens

Updated

Abstract

A total of 22 studies involving 1,478 participants were included in the review.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and child centred therapy (CCT) showed very low certainty evidence of reducing PTSD symptoms compared to management as usual.
  • Imprecise effect estimates were reported for both therapies, with no clear evidence of benefits for other primary outcomes.
  • Comparisons were limited by low numbers of studies and small sample sizes, with a median of 52 participants.
  • High uncertainty in findings was attributed to potential biases and variability in participant age and intervention delivery.
  • No evidence was found that other psychological interventions improved secondary outcomes in comparison to management as usual.
