How well antipsychotic drugs work and how tolerable they are for young people with psychotic disorders

Updated

Abstract

The analysis included 2208 subjects in short-term trials and 1366 in long-term trials of antipsychotics for juvenile psychosis.

  • Short-term treatment showed clozapine, molindone, olanzapine, and risperidone as the most effective in reducing psychosis symptoms.
  • In long-term treatment, only lurasidone demonstrated effectiveness.
  • Clozapine and haloperidol were associated with higher dropout rates due to adverse events.
  • The review highlighted a significant lack of trials and adequate control conditions for evaluating antipsychotics in juveniles.
  • High heterogeneity and inconsistency were observed, particularly in long-term trials.
