Compassion Fatigue and Satisfaction in Chinese Midwives Working in Delivery Rooms

Updated

Abstract

Among 206 Chinese midwives, 75.24% reported moderate risks for compassion satisfaction.

  • Moderate levels of compassion satisfaction (75.24%) and burnout (59.71%) were reported, while 61.65% had low risks for secondary traumatic stress.
  • Positive associations with compassion satisfaction included higher job satisfaction, lower working hours, greater social support, extroverted personality, and recent work recognition.
  • Factors negatively affecting burnout included lower social support, day-night shifts, poor health, frequent exposure to traumatic birth events, and low job satisfaction.
  • Secondary traumatic stress was negatively related to exposure to traumatic birth events, considering leaving the profession, day-night shifts, and poor sleep quality.
