How cone cannabinoid and dopamine receptors work together to increase day and night differences in rod-cone connections in goldfish vision

Updated

Abstract

Cannabinoid CB receptors increase rod-cone communication at night and decrease it during the day.

  • Rod and cone photoreceptor cells in the retina express both cannabinoid and dopamine receptors.
  • Endogenous activation of cone cannabinoid receptors reduces rod-cone coupling during the day when dopamine receptors are active.
  • At night, when dopamine receptors are inactive, cannabinoid receptor activation enhances rod-cone coupling.
  • This interaction between cannabinoid and dopamine receptors may improve night vision by increasing communication between rods and cones.
  • The effects of cannabinoid receptor activation on rod-cone coupling differ based on the time of day.
