Addiction (Abingdon, England)

Counseling alone or with nicotine patches for helping Black smokers who don't smoke every day

Updated

Abstract

Abstinence was 11.4% in the group receiving counseling with nicotine replacement therapy and 8.6% in the counseling-only group.

  • Both groups showed significant reductions in a specific carcinogen marker, with a 53% reduction in the C + NRT group and a 50% reduction in the counseling-only group.
  • Counseling combined with nicotine replacement therapy resulted in more days of abstinence compared to counseling alone.
  • Participants in the C + NRT group reported a significant reduction in total cigarette consumption.
  • There was no evidence of participants compensating with other tobacco products.
