How lung damage seen on CT scans relates to breathing ability in male smokers with and without COPD

Abstract

In a study of 1,138 male smokers, emphysema, airway wall thickness, and air trapping were quantified using CT scans.

  • Emphysema was measured by the percentage of voxels below -950 Hounsfield Units (HU).
  • Airway wall thickness was quantified using the square root of wall area for a theoretical airway with a 10 mm lumen perimeter (Pi10).
  • Air trapping was assessed by the ratio of mean lung density at expiration and inspiration (E/I-ratio).
  • Airway wall thickness was found to most strongly correlate with FEV1 (β = -0.46).
  • Emphysema had the strongest association with the FEV1/FVC ratio (β = -0.55) and lung diffusion capacity (β = -0.42).
  • Air trapping was the primary contributor to residual volume (RV) (β = -0.35).
